Do our cars need timing chain replacement? The dealer was trying to tell me mine was making noise?

According to my mechanic friend....our cars should be good for 200k....So if your odometer is getting near there then do it....especially if it's making noise....from my research..most of the time it's not the chain that can go wrong but the plastic chain guide...

hope this helps

yea but the way I see it ... if you go down that direction and change your chain guide then might as well change the chian and whatever else looks bad ...

dezinetech1000 is right, the chain will almost never go bad. the guide will break way before the chain goes bad. i've seen it on a few which is most likely the noise u hear...

well i'm at 283,000 miles on my original engine and have never had it replaced. or course most of them are highway miles but the only time my engine was torn apart was way back before 50k miles when the head gasket was done under warrenty.

change the oil frequently and you'll be fine for many, many years with the 104 engine. (people have said that this engine is bullitt-proof, well at least the block and bottom half is, LOL!

the chain is supposed to last at least 100,000 miles, but it can go for 300,000 or for 50,000 miles, its all depends. for example, my 420SEL's chain snapped last month, and taking down all the exhaust valves and few guides with it and the car has only 76K miles! I ended up replacing the chain, all the exhaust valves, all the chain guides, chain tensioner, all the gaskets. I figured, since the timing cover is off and the engine is out of the car, might as well do the entire car. so I ended up replacing the entire suspension and steering systems, repaired my exhaust leaks, new brakes all around, engine mounts and much more parts, cost me over $2500 in parts and saved about $3000 or more on the labor since I did it all myself.
SO, if the chain is making noise, replace it as soon as possible, and dont look at the mileage!

C36 have a problem with the chain tensioner. Mine sounded like a diesel engine almost. it is loudest warmed up at idle. The new part runs $55 online and is very easy to put in.

1>remove the belt
2>unhook the battery
3>remove alternator
4>remove the tensioner
Reverse
The hardest part is when you bolt the body in then installing the spring and cap. That spring is hard to compress while turning the cap.
