Bmw Problem Help

i test drove a 98 528i today and when shifting from park to drive there was a thud and a jerk in the transmission/car...he owner said that was normal and that I had shifted too fast...I was wondering if anyone knows about it and can confirm if this is normal or should it not make any noise and no jerk of the car?

when my cars not warmed up it jerks when i shift and makes a thud, id say its pretty normal, german cars have pretty jerky transmissions from what ive noticed.
