So I'm driving my car, and this mostly happens in the morning when the car is not fully warmed up...I'm driving to school everything fine and dandy....reach a red light, slow down to a stop waiting for light to turn green, foot on brake, car in D (automatic), next thing car dies and try to start up again but it just cranks and cranks but no start....this has been happening since the first day I've gotten the car and pissing me off. If anyone has encountered this please let me know what is going on or what you think might be the problem....

I've changed the fuel filter two days ago, so that is ruled out.

Fuel pump seems to be working fine, since I hear it under the car before I start it up.

Don't have a repair manual so barely know jack shit about the car.

Any help appreciated!!!

does it shake at all before it dies?

it just dies....no shaking...this is starting to burden me, and I just bought the car.

Things to note, when the car is hot, normal operating temperature this doesnt happen, only happens when car has been sitting for a while, and the car is cold its prone to this....

Anyone??????

Hmm I dunno a few months back my car wouldnt start and it had died a few times before that.. It was the fuel pump.. It sounded like it was working but it wasnt pumping anything.

thanks, I might look into replacing mine...do you know where to get one for cheap besides ebay....thanks

were your symptoms similar to mine, as in the car dying when it was in park, or in the drive gear while at a stop? When did it actually die?

A mechanic thats a friend of mine replaced mine, probably got the part from the dealership, not sure where you can get one. I order my parts at thebenzbin.com

i've got the same problem on my 94' jag xj6 3.2s
and it was the fuel pump. almost rear end with someone while this happened once when i was paying for parking on a slope while some car is behind me...

It could also be the coolant-temp sensor. My car has done that when I accidentally forgot to plug in my coolant temp sensor.

Are you getting a Check Engine light?

Hey zzDragonzz I cn't really tell you wats wrong but if you couldn't figure it out by now I think its best that you get it inspected by a mechanic! I wouldn't go the stealership though, go to a private european car specialist or something I recommend some but the ones I know are in Orange County. Best of luck !!!

ah sh!t, I hate when this happens in newer benzes. the are a number of things that could cause this, the one that stands out in my mind is software/coding related, and affects the DAS(driver authorizaton system). recently I had a customer with a same problem, but her car wouldnt start for an hour after it dies. I replaced the crank sensor, trasn control module, MAS, fuel pump relay, did a tune up, and still no luck. so benzaddict hepled me out with that one to determine it was the DAS that was causing this. ended up replacing the engine control unit and it fixed it.
I hope its not the same thats happening to your car.

It could be the MAS sensor but is there a check engine light on?

Nope no check engine lights....

I'm taking it to a mechanic today, he's going to check the fuel pressure on the car to see if its getting the right amount of fuel. All these thngs you guys are talking about are relatively new to me DAS, coolant temp sensor, etc...sorry I havent had the time to purchase a repair manual yet, so if yuo guys would lease bare w/ me and let me know where I can find these things, what to look for/what it looks like, would be greatly appreciated. I'm soooo frusterated, I just bought this car and was hoping to have it be perfect, but I cant even drive it.

I will try to replace the fuel pump since replacing the fuel filter didnt solve the problem....I tried to disconnecting the MAS and I started up my car and the rpm's were fluctuating like crazy, up and down up and down...when you guys say you replaced the MAS is this what happened prior to changing it, or is there a diff/ symptom cause when i plug it back in it seems fine, but what do I know.

I will also look into the coolant temp sensor, if someone would let me kno where i can find that.

thanks so much guys,
take care,
Su

it pains me to see that a new 202 owner is going through so much problem at the start. they are usually very good cars given proper care. we've got members here with their cars still in like new conditions even after 300k+ miles of driving. hopefully soon u will be alright again.

so my pops took it to his co-workers sons shop and he diagnosed it and said that some valve that suppose to warm up the car isnt working properly and he's going to order a new one since when the car isnt warmed up properly it causes it to die out.

This seems very odd, and I'm very skeptical of this being the problem...can anyone confirm this as to how long your rpm's stay above 1k when you warm it up in the morning, since mine stays up there for a short amount of time.

thanks

warm-up regulator? mercedes hasnt used those in nearly 20 years! your car will idle at over 1000rpm for about 30 seconds when cold, then level off below 1000rpm. all of this is controlled by the engine module, there is no mechanical part controlling the idle(besides the throttle body).

well that is what he figured because the car always dies when its not above the 80 mark, and when its cold started (been sitting for a long time). I told my dad this and I guess that is what the so called mechanic assumed....If it truly was the fuel pump going bad, can you occasional drive the car around, getting it started, and having it actually work better when hot? Do you guys think its just early signs that the fuel pump is going to eventualy give out?

could this be related to the EGR valve?

zzDragonzz
04-26-2006, 02:01 PM
what is EGR valve?

ALSO one important thing I forgot to mention is that when I'm driving and come to a stop the rpm's fluctuate up and down, but remain constant when i drive or at idle.....is this normal?

So I tried cleaning the MAS, and it seemed to be ok, until this morning...she started up fine, warming up as usual, then I took her out for a test drive to see if she would die on me....low and behold, I parked the car on the side of the curb to test it out....and I'd say for a good 5-10 seconds she passed out, died on me.....waited there for 40 minutes trying to crank her ever so often to no dismay, ended up walking home, a good 4-5 blocks...this suks, I'm going to sell her bc I don't think I ever had good luck w/ european cars....BLAH!!!!

i think you need to go back to they guy from whom you bought the car and have him pay for the repairs. there should be a lemon law in your state, saying that large purchases must work for a certain amount of time, blah blah blah. not sure if it applies to individual sales, but the way i figure it, he HAD to have known about these problems before selling it to you. i think you got screwed, dude.

yea the dealer I bought it from is 111 miles away..he says to bring it in so HIS mechanic can look at it....I'm thinking if they knew about the prob. before hand, and didn't fix it most likely they arent going to fix it, or just as clueless as I am about the problem...

well, bring it back. it's barely a week since u bought it and there's all these problem. which ever way they should either take the car back or fix everything for u.
i am sorry man for your bad experience, buddy. hope your next encounter with 202 will be a good one.

well I just got done changing all 12 spark plugs, my oh my was it a time consuming task, and the plugs in the back were a bitch to get at....well after removal of the old plugs, there was lots of corrosion and oil on some of them so I thought this was for sure the culprit...bought some bosch plugs threw them in and it fired up like a champ.....

WEll after several assumptions on what the culprit might be, I've really narrowed it down to something having to with temperature, because at a certain temp. when warming up, a tad under the 80 mark thats when it dies out on me out of no where, so if anyone knows let me know...thanks

if it keeps dying when hot, Id consider replacing the crank position sensor.
