View Full Version : Where are the miles stored? Gauges or ECU?

I bought a C36 speedometer for my C200K. Its a 160mph gauge set and so is the one my car currently has (but not AMG). The only difference is that my cars clock is in km and this -being english- in miles (the one that counts how many total km or miles the car has done). What I would like to know is are the miles stored in the gauge set or in the ECU i.e? And when I plug it in, will it show miles or whatever the ECU commands it? Remember, Im talking about the small LCD in the middle, not the speedometer. Can the stealership change it? or is there a way to take out the gauge needles and switch panels? I tried but it is impossible, any more pulling pressure and I will break them. Thanks.

the odometer module inside your cluster stores the mileage.

Hm... so I guess it will continue to show miles... Can the dealership reprogram it to show in km? I think they can do that right? and put the desired amount in (the one MY car has). What do you say?

You can peel off the gauge faces and swap them. Just twist the needles past the point where they are supposed to stop, either right or left. You can pull them off pretty easily while you twist them. Alternatively you can replace the whole gauges from cluster to cluster.

You ve been great help once more quys, thanx a lot! I go it. I will probably sell my old gauge set after so if anyone is interested, scream. The odometer will still be in miles. A great and cheap option if you want to install white dilals and still keep your original gauge set. Or if you want km to fool everyone :p We will seeee. Cheeeeerssssssssss!

Its the standard cluster, the temp-petrol and the rev meter dials though remain that of the C36, also black but with red starting @ about 6,900rpm's on the rev meter, unlike the one in the pic which starts @ 5,800rpm's. Also the odometer will count miles.
Im currently selling a white colored blue-plasma dials set on ebay displaying both 160mph and 260km/h, you should check it out.:)Where are you from jmerritt?

Yeah, the miles will be in your cluster. I know this because when my wires went loose, I went about 2-3K without any miles be added to my car!! haha, but then again I didn't have a speedo or tach or any of that either!

Yes all 202's have this, mine didnt work at first but thats because the temp. sensor on my bumper was torn off - you should look in there and see, when you plug it all in this will show outside temp.

If you install a sensor it will work. The sensor is located on the front bumper behind the 2 plastic lids, one to reveal the tow ring and the other to reveal a black plastic spike. Thats the sensor, you might need to lie down in order to see it better. After that follow the cable. Good luck! ;)
