View Full Version : Rear deck speaker removal
I just took out the rear deck speakers in my car and DAMN! The bass is literally 3-5x louder in the cab. I can actually hear the subs now!!!! (Although I just put my system in less than 24 hours ago. I searched around and everyone was saying to remove the rear deck, which requires taking out the seats, the c pillars, headrests, etc. A few people said to just take the grilles off, and take it out that way. Without any good instruction, i gave it a go and it was pretty simple...here are a few notes.
**Doing it this way is a TON less work. It took me about 30 minutes start to finish
1) With headrests UP, pop grilles off with flathead screwdriver. Might take a little convincing, just insert and twist being careful not to damage the grill or the deck upholstrey
2) With the headrests DOWN, remove the 4 screws in each "corner" of the speaker. You can see them from the outside. It's a torx screw, but you'll have a hard time fitting a torx driver in there. I used a small "L" shaped allen, 7/64, fits perfect.
3) Separate the upper grille from the speaker, and slide inwards (towards the center of the deck) and out.
4) From the trunk, remove the "bill" from the speaker basket. You can stick your fingers in the holes in the bottom  and feel a tab that you push down. If that doesn't work, try up. But i think it's down. The "bill" should now come off.
5) Still from the trunk, you'll see 2 black plastic tabs that hold the speaker/basket in. They are located on the side of the speaker closest to the rear seatback. Push them in and you should be able to pop the speaker up with no problems
6) From the inside, remove the harness from the clip (where the wires attach to the basket) and from there, you can dissasemble the connector to disconnect the speaker from the wiring. I chose to disconnect form the speaker side, so the wiring left in the trunk/deck has a harness- and no exposed wiring. Then i tucked them in wherever i could that wouldn't make a rattle.
Turned on the car, double checked my eq settings, popped in some st. lunatics and cranked the motherfucker up.
DAMN!!!!
Now i've got to pad my rear liscence plate and tighten the trunk latch to clear up the rattling.
DAMN!!!! The difference is night and day.
Not bad, considering i've had the car 1 week today :D

the best is to port the cabin were the rear arm rest is. I have also removed my rear speakers but find the combo of the rear speakers gone and ski sack gone to be the best
That would work well for me, especially since my enclosure is wedge shaped (to fit behind the seats of a regular cab truck).
However I don't think i could stomach cutting up that rear metal

thats how i felt, not having the tools I cut it out , well basically chopped it out - it looked hidious but when everything is in its place - you wont even know it!
so would it make it a little weight reduction to cut out that whole panal ? not much that will be noticed in performance?

This is great, just what i was looking to do myself...

did you just remove the metal mesh part of the grill, or the whole thing including plastic surround?

the whole thing including surround, it's one piece. Just stick a flathead under teh plastic surround, and pry/twist until it pops off.
It took me a little while because i was afraid to break it, and thought i had to push some tabs in. Just pry the fucker off, careful not to mess up the deck upholstry or plastic grille surround.
I used a bit of force and did not ruin/indent anything

I removed my rear deck speakers today, took like 10 minutes, I released the tabs and forced them out of the deck, didnt damage anything..

I *might* try doing this. What kind of bass do you get as a result? Im getting annoyed at bass that shakes...I like a little shake but not more shaking than actual bass!!
Id hope it resolves this...im looking for an even more richer sound.
Let me know someone....

i found that it helps with sound imaging A LOT, and it reduced a lot of the vibration. There still is vibration, i'm going to work on that this weekend

Ok now I just got me thinking....if the sub is tapped (i beleive) into those rear speakers and I take them out then what??
In what way did it improve imaging? Move more bass to the front?

well, theres one of 3 scenarios that i gather from your post.
1) you're using a stock bose system w/ subwoofer -- if this is the case, i don't think it would be worth your time to remove the rear speakers, as they're only mid-bass drivers and work well with the subwoofer
2) you're using an aftermarket subwoofer and amp, but tapped into your rear speakers because you don't have an aftermarket head unit with RCA preouts (or you're using the stock head unit) -- you could still do this, since the lines going to the rear speakers are tapped and receive power whether the speakers are there or not.
3) you have an after market headunit and amp which seems to be what the other guys have in this thread. if thats the case, you don't have anything to worry about, proceed as suggested at your own discretion.
as far as the "imaging" seems like it would simply boost the amount of bass that enters the cabin. similar to having a car with fold-down rear seats, vs one that does not. having the seats down can yield dramatic difference in the volume of the bass. i don't particularly call bass "imaging" though.
-with that being said, i went a different route altogether. i have fixed rear seats, and components in the rear deck in the stock location. i removed the first aid kit, and cut a hole out where it used to seat. i then sound dampened the plastic lid where the first aid kit used to rattle, and removed my 3rd brake light. this helped eliminate almost 80% of the vibration, and allowed more than enough rich bass into the cabin (almost too much). i may fabricate a cover for the hole i cut that is pourous to let in some, but not all of what i have now.
now i'm just looking for a schatz rear lip spoiler w/ 3rd brake light and all will be well.
hope that helps

Im leaving them + I have the fold down seats...if you dont then its much harder, I read, for the bass to come inside the cabin.
by helping imaging, i meant having the majority of the sound, or focus, in the front. I don't like hearing music in the back, other than a slight fill, and the bass.
does that make sense? i dunno if i explained it funny....

Yup know what you mean. Actually I have that issue....too much bass in the back and you KNOW its coming from the back.w
