This is really strange! I have a 1997 C220 Diesel, I left the car with my wife for a week and i come back to a problem in the wiper. First of all the slow speed doesn't work at all. And the intermidiate and fast speeds work but whenever you switch it off the wiper stops where ever it is. Just anywhere on the windscreen! I thought i might have a problem with the relay, but i can hear it click on the first speed. Any suggestions?

Read through this list from "Search" (http://www.club202.com/forums/search.php?s=&action=showresults&searchid=171761&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending)

Yes I looked on the search before i posted this thread. But all i could find is how to solve problems with the wipers efficiency. My wiper is efficient but has two problems, the slow speed doesn't work, and it doesn't park automatically, where ever i turn it off it stops, it doesn't move one bit when i turn it off. I have to wait for the wiper to go down and then turn it off, it gets annoying!

I would read that how-to about greasing the wiper motor (and mechanism). Looks like it is partially wokring, so I'd try a basic maintenance before going to the dealer and such.

Sounds like a relay fault.
Take out the Combination Relay for the wiper motor / turn signal / hazards / etc. Make sure the contacts on it are clean, beat it on your head once or twice and plug it back in.

I'd try this first before going any further. Let us know how you make out.

I tried a new relay, i actually tried 7 other relays from a used spare part store, and it still didn't work. But the other day as i was changing the aircondition filter i noticed that there were some mouse crap in there and now i'm suspecting that maybe that mouse ate one of the wires for the wiper and thats why it doesn't park. Wild guess? Or have i just turned crazy??

It's possible.
The slow speed goes thru the relay and the med & fast speeds go directly to the motor. If something broke the slow speed wire...

I'm not sure about what causes the motor to not park. Perhaps it needs to be reset? I'm guessing here.

Do you know how can i reset it?

Sorry. I read the section a bit more carefully and it is talking about installing a new motor.
Resetting the wipe motor to park position.
Holding it in your hand plug it in.
Turn on key and move to position 1 on the combination wiper switch.
Turn back to position 0 turn off key.
Install & check to see if it's in park position. marking on motor lines up with dedent on housing.

On the plug for the motor I'm pretty sure that 2 is ground 4 is 12V and 6 is the slow speed from the relay.

i think the same problem has happened to me (but im pretty sure i dont have mice) Since i bought my 280 the fastest speed (III) on my turn signal/wiper switch has not worked, but today the rain was really bad and i needed to get the fastest one to work, so it switch would not switch to the III so i had to force it, now non of my windshield setting work, the only way i can get my wipers to work is if i turn in on then back off ofer and over (very annoying) im thinking its a wire inside the turnsignal stick. anyone know how to open one of these up or anyother idea? i know its not the wondshield motor, im pretty sure its just the switch/mechanism

any help would be great!

thanks

Nothing is simple on a Merc!

I agree with stricklyspeakin's posts.

I recently had my wiper function for a unexpected sweep randomly without any selection on my part. After much research, I traced the problem to the multifunction relay. With this relay removed, the wiper does not function on the intermittant mode or at speed 1.

However, the wiper will still function at speed 2 and speed 3 with the multifunction relay removed as these speeds are powered through a seperate standard type relay. But, the wipers will NOT park with the multifunction relay removed.

As advised in the above posts, remove the multifunction relay. Carefully removed the relay cover and use switch cleaner spray on the innards. Reassemble and test your wipers. This should last a few weeks until the problem reoccurs! Then go buy a new multifunction relay.

Multifunction relays are easily obtainable from online shops such as:

EDIT: Gee, I just replied to a really old post. Must have come up when I did a search earlier! Oh well, someone might get some use out of it anyway!

Had EXACTLY the same problem on my last Merc.

Took it to a Mercedes Specialist who diagnosed I would need a new wiper motor and new wiper linkage, = VERY expensive.

They lubricated it all for me, for £30 and it worked fine!
