Hi all,
wanted to know on oil consumption on a c180 petrol manual with 120K kms on the clock as I have just had to put 1+ litres of oil in it and it has done 6000 km since the car was serviced. ( dipstick measured in the midle ).
Does this sound normal as the MB dealer (who sold it to me five months ago with a year waranty) said?
I use semisynthetic oil 10W-40 because of hot climate.
Most of the above 6000 kms was around town (5000 medium traffic /1000 highway) not hardly run, I drove normal (2500 - 4500 rpm).
Use premium gas 92 octane and mpg is 21 in town 30 highway (think is normal).
No leaks, no smoke and everything seems ok.

In case that is not normal. Pls advice if I've something to check / repair, or if I've to change oil type to full synthetic

i think 1 liter (1+quart) per 6000km (3750 miles) is a bit much. Its a relatively low mileage car (74500 miles).

Barring any obvious leaks, take it to a garage and have them perform a leak down test. It'll give you an idea of how sound the engine is.

Better yet. You could ask the dealer since it has a warranty, but it sounds like you don't trust them right now.

Synthetic or not, the oil's got to be going somewhere.

I read somewhere that MB will consider excesive oil consumption to be about 1 qt every 600 miles, or so!!!!!!, which is ridiculous to me. Last time I checked on my ML 320 with 100K miles uses 1 qt every 5K miles, which I think it is a lot of oil going somewhere, not by leak though. I am sure that the dealer will say this is normal.

Although I understand that some oil should be lost or I may say "used" normally, my C280 will not consume a drop in 10K miles interval changes at 75K miles now. This car is being on Mobil1 0W 40 since day 1, but the ML320 was on dino for the first 2 changes which were done by the dealer at 13K miles intervals, per the computer. After this I have used Mobil1 15W 50.

In your case, I think the dealer will say for sure that your level of consumption is normal. Yes, I know....

Thanks,

MB dealer insist that is normal consumption especially when the car mainly used for short trips in town with traffic.
Really ridiculous. The owners manual says consumptiom max 1 liter /1000km !!!!!
Rene, did you solve the problem with mobil 1 15w-50?

I bought the '99 truck in '00 with 30K miles. That is when I started using the Mobil1 15W 50 up until now.

that isnt bad.
i change my engine oil every 5000km and dont add any oil between changes but it would probebly go down a little bit on the dipstick. adding 1 ltr between oil changes isnt bad!

if excessive oil burning concerns you, you might want to try their products:

Thanks for your comments,

MB dealer agreed to start an oil consumption test

nenad, maybe xado is a good solution, but I think is better to repair everything during warranty period :)

Hi nenad,

I read your thread and the xado site and it looks interesting. One thing I think I read somewhere, is says it last for a year or so?, where do this hard material goes?

After some time on your engine, is still working good?

I am thinking about trying it on my truck. My truck is being using 1 qt/5K miles, but it looks like is going to 1qt/4K miles now. So it looks like it is progresively going up.

I dont think it will wear out in a year, but rather XADO guarantees their product to be effective for at least a year, regardless of mileage. now, make sure that the oil consumption is not from an oil leak or leaky vavle seals, because xado wont help you with those, the one that xado works on are worn out piston rings and cylinder walls.

I understand. I don't have a clue on where I am loosing 1 qt/5k miles, which is considered normal anyways. It is just curiosity.
