    Where's the pollen filter?

I've poked around some in my 1995 C280, and I can't seem to find the pollen filter. Dealer replaced it a few years ago for about $160!!! I've noticed the airflow is starting to decrease, as it did before the last replacement. Question 1: where's the filter & how do I remove it (or is it obvious)? Question 2: Is it possible to blow out the filter to restore air flow or should I buy a new filter? Question 3: Can I get a filter cheaper from someone other than the dealer (as I recall, filter was about $80)?

It's right underneath the glove compartment/passenger side. You can find like 3 screw holding the cover. Unscrew the cover and you would be able to see the filter then I think you just slide it out.
Check Mercedeshop.com or Importec.com for the cabin filter. It's no more than $30.

You learn something new on each visit to club 202!

I did not know we had this filter. I suspect mine needs a replacement as well.

JRE320--thanks for the info. I'll take a look this weekend.

kameraguy--you really notice it in the summer when the car's been sitting in the sun. If the filter's clean, the fan kicks into high and SHOULD blow a ton of air, and will cut back speed after about 2 or 3 minutes. If the fan continues at high speed for longer than that, check the filter. It's probably restricting the air flow.

if you really need them i could scan and post picts of the instructions but it's pretty easy to find it and change it only takes 5-10 mins

Eurosport, hold off on the pics--I'll give it a try this weekend. Had to laugh at your post--I live in Albuquerque, but lived in the Seattle area for the first 23 years of my life. I can just imagine what you found in your filter. I lived across the street from 70 acres of woods (100-foot-plus firs and hemlocks) and had no garage. Needles everywhere. We'll see what I find in my filter--probably tumbleweed remnants and lots of dust.

You should be replacing the cabin dust filter every 10K-miles or so. It will greatly extend the life of your blower motor and your AC evaporator. It's a cheap filter and a snap to do.

For the W202 the cabin dust filter should be replaced at each "A" service, which is at about 10,000 miles if you're using the FSS system. As per the book.

    Blackmercedes,
If you could please remove the bottom part of your sig. There's
no reason why we need to know what you've sold in the past.
    Thanks for your cooperation.

Rad2000 20,000 is about right for cabin filter.i buy my Mann filters for $11 so why not at 10,000. 60,000 is too long. Just my 2 cents.

Replaced the cabin/pollen filter this weekend. It was filthy. I checked my records and found out it had been replaced 26 months and just over 20,000 miles ago. Since Albuquerque is particularly dusty, this may not be a proper test, but to replace it yearly here is not unreasonable. Other areas of the country may pose different problems, such as needles and leaves (NOT a problem here).

Obviously a clogged filter makes the fan and A/C work harder as they fight a battle with the automatic temperature control. The fan speed drops right down now--everything's quieter! I've learned my lesson. I'll order 2 or 3 filters off the internet and replace each spring or if the system seems to be struggling. Now that I know what I'm doing, it should be about a 10-minute job.

Thanks for the help and advice!
