    replacing valve lifters

has anyone replaced valve lifters on C36 motor?

    1. is it a difficult job? how many hours? what is the expected mechanic charge.

    2. are C36 lifters same as C280?

    3. rockauto carries them for 16$ but for our 24 valves that seems to add up. should i replace them all?

    4. my friends is pretty good with engines (took his corrado vr6 engine apart and put it back) but are any specials instructions he should know if he decides to do it.

    Thank you

Iv never replaced lifters before, but i know they run incredibly tight clearances so that the oil pressure inside stays constant to take up the play,it is also critical that the same lifter goes back in the same hole when being reused...this would probably mean the work would need to be done with the head off and in at a head specialist if you were doing a major overhaul.

Can i ask why you are planning to do the lifters?

Mine are in perfect nick and they still sound alittle sloppy =)
Iv had the head of twice and while off had them professionally checked.

Well i have ticking noise especially when starting up in the morning and then it goes away. Usually when i switch to new oil change it goes away and comes back toward the end of oil life. Maybe a stuck valve lifter i am thinking. my gas milage is not so good and the car does not pull as it should. If i floor it it goes to redline and kinda hangs there before switching. Before it used to pull and switch gears fast. Plus after spirited driving i have a burned smell outside. And exaust or catalytic making cracking noises. My friend says my fuel is not being burned completely hence bad mileage no power. no cel though. My other mechanic also was leaning toward fuel side and he showed me tha ticking when listening to fuel rail could be coming from injectors. I just dont know what else could it be. is it hard to get fuel injectors taken out and be sent for cleaning? seems like it cheaper than valve job

how many k's has she done benzo?

I guess it all revolves around what the oil has been like since new.

i think u should ask aound redc36im not sure if all of that is ur problem, dont worry about the injectors, they probebly wont need a clean and yes they tick that is there job so dont worry about that.
from what you say id be thinking more that it would be your transmission,

all your symptoms to me seem like 5 different peoples random input/advise, when everyone tells you something different u have to question who actually knows what there talking about/whos right.... dont you?
if every1 was saying the same thing then yes but hmmmm.

but yes lifters make that noise but i doubt they would be causing you noticable perfoemance drop like you describe, unless you have like run out of oil and fcukt them or somethin.

it seems too simple but what i would do first if not already done is change all the oil, transmission and engine, and change the spark plugs, and check the leads at the same time, and change fuel filter and give it one of those oil cleaners when changing the oil, and one of those fuel injector cleaners in the tank, if ur worried about the injectors,

my 2cents take it 4 what its worth

I believe that there are cross over tubes that feed the lifters oil (like the M119 Engine) they are made of plastic and tend to crack or break down over time. thus giving less or no oil pressure to the lifters.
now you may just get away with replacing the cross over tubes.. but if its been happening for a while then you may need the lifters as well.. cam too maybe. depends on the damage.
my guess is just the cross overs and the lifter.

anyone confirm the cross over tubes on the M104 AMG engine?

I hate to add comments when I am really not sure that they will help...

...having said that, make sure that you are using engine oil of the correct viscosity. OK, let's assume that of course you are doing so!

Rattley M104 C36 engine? Yeah well, big deal, we all suffer that. But, that shouldn't decrease performance...

But, a bad MAS? That will cause performance problems and transmission shift problems...food for thought and much cheaper and quicker to install than going for the full blown head-job...as they say in the classics.

And NO, for some reason, the MAS doesn't always come up as a CEL...I don't know why?

I just changed one on my 2000 CLK320 a few months back for very poor acceleration and weird auto gear changes.

No CEL, and the new MAS restored the performance to as good as when she was a new car!

(PS. I strongly agree with Cru328prod comment!)

well i just got my car back from the dealer after replacing all 16 valve lifters, the knocking is pretty much gone, just a little bit but im assuming thats normal of the cam shaft hitting the valves...plus all these cars sound like diesals anyways, but the dealer covered half of the bill so i was out the door for 695, and they replaced all the coolant, oil, some gasket, and they broke my cam shaft breather tube which they replaced and charged me 4 bucks for it...i bought a new serp belt last night one of those gator belts which i had on my old car and really liked it, possibly plugs in the next few hundred miles or so, so after this on to the brakes and then get the windows blacked out...and obviously system back in...

because when i bought the car from them off the used lot, they provided a 2 month, 2k mile warranty that was a 50/50 split of any problems, and i figured shit 700 for a complete valve job i should do it..

I would recommend that you replace your engine oil and filter. Use fully synthetic Mobil 1 European Car Formula 0W-40.
