    Running really lean

I have a 99 c230 k manual and I went to a rolling road day yesterday in Liverpool and it was one of those hub dynos. Anyway my car only did one run as its running so lean the guy seems to think it could be the fuel pump as the car has done 152 k. Or maybe it's the big air filters I have, either way it's not good has anybody had this problem it's down about 40 bhp but still pulls like a train but now I'm advised not to take it over 4000rpm. He told me though with a t30 turbo and standard internals I could get 400bhp cos he's done one but mapped it to 350 piece of piss. Any help would be great thanks

I know ZMatt had the same issue. He said he believed it was related to his air filters. He even mentioned the 4K RPM range.

The guy said his 2 guesses were fuel pump or maybe the filters. I will be upset if they have to go. I will have a play this week at work but not tomorrow cos I've just been and the stone roses gig in Manchester and I'm in no fit state

The air filters wont cause the car to run lean. The issue of lean or rich running comes from fuelling. I would check the fuel filter, lines and injectors and see if there are any issues. Get it on star or other diagnostic equipment and get the fault codes read. I'm near Liverpool too, so when you fancy fitting your turbo, I'd like to see how you do it as I've got a Mosselman manifold, a T3 turbo, some AMG front brake calipers all waiting to be fitted. I'd really like some pointers.

Air filter swap is an easy first step If you've still got the OEM one. Fuel filter is a regular maintenance item and also can't hurt to change too. How long do you have access to the dyno?
The O2 sensors also might me telling the computer to lean out the mixture. Just another thought for the fire.

Well I've put the air box back on had it on the mot machine and everything is bob on. But need it under load really I mean the faster u go the leaner it will go. The only fault is the brake light switch really were a Merc specialised garage in Alderley edge the car runs fine I don't think it's fuel related but I'm doin the plugs tomorrow and I will throw a new fuel filter on. The filter is new but we have had a few in the past from unipart that have failed. It does seem better now with the air box on so next is who wants to buy the filters. As far as putting a turbo on I'm not going to bother as I'm saving for a house but if u have all the stuff I have a mad mate who puts turbos on all kinds of shit cars he's really good. The guys dyno is near the docks where they build the ships camel laird is it. I just followed the shell suits lol

Haha, what you sayin? Shellsuits are all the rage amongst the scally community. Mad mate sounds good, if he knows his stuff I'd like to talk through some possibilities with him. PM me his details when you have time.

Is the car stock? What we found when we hooked the wideband up is that with a stock ecu and bolt on mods the ecu will run super rich until about 4k rpm and then leaner and leaner, if our engines revved any higher it would have been dangerous. My car needs (and I'm working on) a custom retune to address this.
    Completely mad.
'99 C230K, intake and exhaust more on the way.
'86 MKIV Escort RS Turbo, stock for now, chip and more boost on the way
'75 Fiat 124 Spider, koni shocks, bigger carb and drilled/slotted brakes
to tune and hoon the mbz master race.

completley standard it was fine up to 4k rpm after that it dropped off the chart at 15. ive got the airbox back on now im going to have a play around next week. maybe a bolt on fuel pressure regulator to shove more fuel in as there cheap. lucky cos when i do give the car beans i take it right to the red line in every gear. u wouldnt know where the asr fuse is so next time its on the dyno that doesnt go mad
it got running lean 153bhp at the wheels
