When I start up from cold in the morning, the engine rpms fluctuate between normal and 4000 rpm. This goes on for three minutes. After that event has ended the vehicle hesitates when accelerates from a standstill eg no power for two seconds then blast-off. Any suggestions?

it could also be that you MAS sensor went out....

I agree with this, if you haven't had your car tuned up in 60K or so, the sparks could be to blame. I would definitely try the fuel injector cleaner first, cause it's cheaper.Sounds like you need to change your sparkplugs. And also try some Redline fuel injection cleaner.
I beleive it to be your MAF or MAS sensor, same thing happened to me
