How to tell when 202 shocks are going...

How do you tell when the shocks on a 202 are going bad. I know some cars they get really stiff and others get bouncy, which one is it for 202's? What is the usual mileage you replace them at?

it's not really a specific to 202 kind of question, but

when it gets bouncy (i.e. oscillates) then the shock is worn

when it gets rock hard, the shock is blown (usually accompanied by that particular corner becoming super slammed indo style)

Either situation means it's time for new shocks. Also, as speedybenz has recommended, every 60K miles is a good interval.

OEM 202 shocks are Billstein shocks...those don't wear out...

    Steve,

Is this the same case for the 210? My dad's car has about 240Km on the clock and has been on the original shocks since the begining. Would the ride quality not change significantly if replaced them with the exact same parts? If not, I might as well get a set of HDs then.

well i have about 118k on my 95 c280 and my shocks seem ok.... my friends 85 318i bmw went to 220k before the stock shocks collapsed.... my 95 318is has m-technic suspension so you feel everything! this is a case where you don't fix something that isn't broken....

My 190D had run 600k kilometer on the original shocks and my C250D had about 325k kilometer (I think) before I swapped them for Koni adjusteable shocks...the Konis are already under the car for 225k kilometer (excpet for the right rear which has been replaced twice due to oil leaking - something you hardly ever get to see with OEM Billsteins).

The 60k miles shock replacement advise is a tale made up by those who manufacture shocks...
