Question fuel gauge or sending unit

Dear Guys, I read some old tread on "not working fuel gauge and relevant sending units".

    This happen me this morning:
starting the car the fuel gauge is still down with reserve light on!
I've turned off and started again and the gauge now seems work right

To note that the tank has been filled up full a couple of days ago, and I've done already about 50km so, at the moment it was not full full (I've read the suggestion to avoid overfilling).

I've also read about the slow movement of the gauge when the "sending unit" (two in the fuel tank) work bad, in my case, as soon I restarted the car the gauge jump up immediately.

So, please what do you suggest?

It' a sendind units problem or a gauge contacts problem?

    Thanks for you help

    mine is a kompressor W202, year '98.

this has happend to me a couple of times in the past 2 or 3 months...

its been a known fact that some sticky stuff like paint or glue gets the gauge stuck..

it requires u to disassemble your gauge cluster to clean it up...

but in my case.. its a rare occasion this happens so I dont think its worth my time to attempt to fix the issue.. when a simple ignition off\on solves the problem =)

now if the gas gauge just all of a sudden read empty in the middle of a trip I would be concerned. or if it stoped working all together

    thanks a lot friend.

I was concerned after reading the several similar problems related to the 2 sending units in the fuel tanks.

Are you sure it's not our case? How is possible something stick the gauge, inside the cluster?

    thanks a lot again

Ok I've found old treads with this, also the link to the german forum, but they are not so clear to me. Are they a sort of weight to put on the needles?

To note that my problems seems:
1 time the needle down WITH reserve light on (someone said that the sensors are two differents, this should means something?)
Now it seems the needle go up and stay up (with key in off position it's down as normal)

May be it's not a stick problem?

    thanks really a lot

    Please help me.

If the needle is now always fully up I belive it's not a problem related to a sticky needle, isn't it?,,,,because turning off it return down!:bored:

May be is a sending units problem?

    Please reply me.

From what you described it is the sending unit in the tank. It happened to me a few times but not frequent enough to replace it.

I would suggest just to keep an eye on it for the next few fill ups. If everything seems to work ok then it was probably a glitch.

I wouldnt worry too much about it at this point in time.

If the issue is that the fuel needle is not showing full when you've filled up the tank...you may want to try this method:

Stop topping off when you fill up.

It may take some time, but the guage will fix itself.

If your issue is that the guage is erratic in showing the level of fuel, then the above may not work. In any case, if you're scared of running out of fuel while driving somewhere, just use the trip odometer, and it shouldn't be a worry.
If you can thread the needle... and if your drive can lead to Pole Position today, history may hold a place for you tomorrow.

    search. think. do. post.

Dear Renn 208 and Nokia 8860,

thanks a lot for your appreciated help.

I really take great care of you input and suggestion.

Please Renn 208 what do you mean with "Stop topping off when you fill up"? To avoid over filling (not to fill completly the tank?) Sorry thanks.

FYI: yesterday I tied disconnecting for 15 min the battery, after that the needle was OK (a little bit down the upper marging, because I've done abt.170 km), ....this morning instead the needle is again upper.

Yes probably are the sender units, I wait a couple of fill to better verify.

    Thanks again.

    Dear Guys,

the problems seems still happen often, not always.

Since I've noted I've a small leak of fuel in way of fuel filter/pump (I couldn't locate where exactly), please do you think it's related?

    Thanks again.
