sorry I'm new to mercs so can't be sure but as long as the warning lights are all the same and the connectors you attach at the back of the binacle are the same then yes they will fit.

not sure about speedo accuracy re: 140mph to 160mph cluster, if like other cars the speed sensor is in the gearbox this may be an issue, i.e. if the C280 gearbox is geared differently or has different sensor in the box to a 4 cylinder c-class then you will need to change that as well.

Not sure how the mercs measure speedo but in VW's the speed sensor is in the gearbox.

Apologies for not being more help.

People have retrofitted C36 and C43 AMG cluster to C180 and C230K. So I do not think that the 4 cyl vs 6 cyl thing will be an issue. But I do believe that you would need to get a Pre 1997 cluster for it to correctly operate. You cannot mate a post 97 cluster to a pre 97 car.

I have one question and it might sound stupid. Does the mileage get stored in the cluster or somewhere else in the car? I sure hope it doesn't get stored in the cluster.

No. for a 1996 you would need a 1994-1996 cluster.

The cluster will show whatever mileage was driven on that cluster. The car itself does store the mileage electronically. When you switch clusters, you need to sync up/wake up with the car's computer via Star Diagnostic. When you install a new cluster, the cluster display will show dashes ------ instead of numbers. Once it's waken up and syncronized to the car's computer via SDS, it'll work like normal.

Yes, the year is what matters the most. You would even be able to put a C36 IC in the 1994-96 C class.
