    Radar Detector Install

Where would you people put radar detectors in the car. I am going to be getting one soon, most likley a Escort 8500 x50 red version. I thought they needed to be in the window area, so I would use a suction cup and put it up everytime I got into the car. When I left the car I would put it into the glove box and lock it. Any suggestions, I have seen ppl hard wire then near the rear view mirror but I want to have it easily removable if I get pulled over. I think it will piss the cop off more if I try and get out of a speeding ticket and he sees a detector in the car. Any ideas?

An Escort S2 wireless is a nice solution. If you use it regularly, you will need to change the batteries every week, though. So far, I have been very happy with it.

i have a wired one, i ran the wire from the cig lighter (hardwired to it) behind the HVAC and radio piece and the wire comes out at the top left, then i took velcro and put one piece on the bottom of the radar and one on my dash right on top of the gauge cluster so you can see it over the streering wheel, i will post some pis laterz, but the position is good i think only for seeing out the front of the car and i can grab it off easily because it is velcored

The preformance of a cordless detector will never compair to a corded one, across all fields. I would consider a cordless if I had a motorcycle but in a car it will be corded.

I can see what you are talking about alboogiee, but how is the signal all around. I know you said good for only front but have you seen a large diffrence if you mounted it in the best area, like near the rear view mirror.

I remember someone had a v1 hardwired and a remote display in the ash tray pop out.

That's Will, W420. The downside to it is that you gotta take your eyes off the road and look down. I have my remote display on the left side on my dash. I'm gonna move it eventually though....

You can mount the V1 remote display in direct site of your speedo cluster easily As the cluster slides out, there's a slight gap between the bottom cluster and dash. I made an "L" braket out of thin metal which slides between this gap, then i screwed the back of my V1 display to the "L" part, then slid the display onto it. This way it sits inline with the speedo so it's easy to see it.

I can take pics later if you like. It's easy and ergonomically sound

I have the escort 8500 x50 - got if after the chp got me for 95 - save my ass countless times - on average, I get hit 5 times on the stretch of the 101 between Paso Robles and San Jose - it goes off before I even see them (which means they can't see me). I have it hard-wired (Escort provides a cool clip that you clip on to a live wire for power). I just leave it on my wind shield right below the rear view mirror - very important so you can detect d*#ks from behind.

They're not illegal so he can't do a thing. F them! They aren't playing fair. I was in court yesterday. All 10 people in court for that session were stopped via radar.

Too bad we cant have jammers, or I would have a blinder m40 installed already. It has been proven to jam 100% of all radars from all distances, and is only a few bills. I decided to get a Bel Vector, and the unit is coming on tues. I am looking to put it on the rear view mirror area but only temp because I dont want it getting stolen. The less stuff they see the better. I am worried anywhere I put it around the dash will be too low, I like the idea of the left side near the tweeter vent but I am sure it will loose some signal their. Any other ideas, pics?

I found the best place for the escort is right under the rear view mirror. I tried lower positions but then you compromise effectiveness. PLUS, you can't detect rear radar. Under the rear view enables longer forward detection and rear detection through the back window.

I also found that it's set up for that purpose because the display is set up to face the driver. That height also enables you to hear the audable signal which is key for the type of radar it is detecting (Ka being the most important in my situation).

It really does not obstuct the view any and you get used to it. The alternative is getting a big fat ticket. I would definately hard wire it with the optional kit. They give you a phone cord which I tucked (with my fingers) under the head liner next to the wind shield.

    Sorry no pics. I'm lazy

I was thinking between the mirror and the sunroof/light controls. This would be perfect for hiding because the upper tinting on the front window would hide it in the front from cops and theft. If I cop looked from either side, he still would not be able to see it unless he bent down and looked for it. Its a bit above your suggestion and may have some performance side effects, but I will try them both out.

I will get the radar tomarrow and install it asap. I hope to have it hardwired but easily removeable for theft reasons. I can run the wire into the headliner with a flat head and to the left, down the A pillar, into the driver kick panel where I have some power and ACC wiring, ill also ground it their too. Ill let you know when I get it tomarrow. Thanks

don't worry about the cops unless it's illegal in your state (it isn't in CA)

also, you don't want to mount where there's tinting since that effects the performance

lastly, if you mount high in front of the rear view, you again obstruct the units ability to detect radar from behind - there's nothing worse than getting back-doored (unless you live in West Hollywood I guess)

I recived the detector today. I unpacked it and to my suprise it had no hardwire kit, and I unplugged the cig lighter on my car so I couldent use it. I am going to go to radioshack tomarrow to get a cig lighter to bare wire adapter. I tested it out in my moms volvo, I put it in the center of the windshield and drove around for about 30min. I dont want to say I was upset with it, but I drove by three diffrent cops and the detector dident make a peep, yet when I drive my a mall it goes crazy. I was hoping it would tell me when a cop was near even if he is not using his radar, just so I know. Anyways, I will get the adapter and once its installled and working Ill take pics and let you know what I think.

Also, the only reason I dident want a cop to see I had a detector is for the simple fact once he sees I have one, I think it will be harder to talk my way out of a ticket. He wont go easy on me reguardless of the reason he pulled me over if he sees I have a detector, stereo, ect.

Those cops didn't have their radar on so, they can't give you a radar ticket. That's one thing you need to be careful of. They will drive towards you, then switch it on. You still need to keep your eyes peeled. IT WILL tell you if cops are near if they have their radar on.

The X and K bands you were getting when you drove near the mall are the automatic doors. If that bugs you, switch to "City" mode.

Believe me, it will save your ass. Be patient grasshopper.

BTW, you should have asked for the hardwire kit when you ordered. Call Escort and order it. The cig lighter is goofy.

There's also no way to talk your way out of a radar ticket. It's a revenue channel for the County....that's why they use it. Do some rsch on what you "Should" and "Should not" do when you are stopped. In brief, shut up and take the ticket then fight it latter. Don't give the cop any reason to remember you.

DEFINITELY be aware that cops can still come up from behind and pace you - they don't even have to be in your lane. I got a ticket from CHP the other day and my detector didn't even go off. Cop was in the far right lane as I was making a pass in the left. The ticket claims I was going 85 (estimated) - should I waste a day and fight the ticket?

Also, you can get tagged by laser. I got picked off in Ohio earlier this year at 98 mph. Generally laser is harder to detect because the path of the beam is much narrower, and because cops typically leave it off until they find a good (i.e., Mercedes) target. Once you're hit, you're done. Unfortunately, the detector lights up like a christmas tree, you hit the brakes out of panic/reflex, and its like you're making an announcement - "It was ME occifer."

Finally, watch out for truckers. I was driving cross country on 80 east earlier this year and it was 3am, with only me and the semis on the road somewhere in the middle of Iowa. Apparently, the truckers radioed in a trooper because I was "blowing by them like they were standing still." Whatevah - rat bastards. Few minutes later the headlights of a sedan come up in the distance - I knew who it was miles before any lights or radar were on me.

My point is - detectors help, especially when you roll up on a lazy cop trying to tag people with constant-on Ka band as he sits on the side of an open highway. But stay alert people.

Anyone ever get tagged in an area where "Speed Limit Enforced by Aircraft"? What do they do, drop the ticket on you, bomber style?

I agree with all of unHookt's points - I just fought a chp radar ticket and won...it was dismissed when the chp didn't show but that was a result of me working the system. I WOULD DEFINATELY fight because your initial odds are 30% if you do it by Written Delcaration. If you lose that (as I did), you can ask for another trial. SEE LINK BELOW - point is, you can roll over and just pay the tax (which is what it is) or you can make the weasels work for it.

There's a web site called http://www.ticketassassin.com/. It's very educational and for $25, he can help you fight your ticket through pre-formulated defenses for various tickets.

From what I've read, they can't give you a ticket based on aircraft evidence alone. I think it's considered a "speed trap" which is illegal in CA.

Laser is coming to chp as well (already have it in Nor Cal area). Here's another resource for laser Jammers = legal

I did, once in Wisconsin, in a 1969 AMX. What happens is that plane radios a trooper who will pull you over. I was REAL lucky that day. They wrote me up for 19 over, when I was easily doing 50 over.

kraut - I'm in Sacto. What is a written declaration? The document I received uses strongarm language to try to get me to pay $196 to get it over with. What specifically did you do?

I'm going to try to fight it, dammit!

ok I know this is going to piss someone off lol. but I am still hung up on how to prewire my detector. I would like to tap power from my cigarette lighter but don't know how. Can someone show pics or something of what I need to buy to do this? I dont think I will have trouble routing the wire, I just am not really into the electrical part......thanks

    swag

escort can provide special clips that you clip on a hot wire for power. basically little teeth cut into the wire's insulation and make the connection - you plucg the detectors power cord (assuming you got the escort) into that wire

I took the cowel off under the driver side brake pedal area and took a silly wild ass guess (swag) and found a hot wire

don't have the car here for pix - call escort, they'll help you

No they have an aircraft pace u from the air and then radio in a trooper to pull u over. Its not as accurate and can be fought a little better then normal tickets.

I totally forgot to update this back in the beginning.

I found some old pics of how I mounted my V1 remote display.

As for the unit, it sits high on the windshield on the passenger side. The wires are tucked between the roof liner and a-pillar., the routed behind the dash to the steering column. Power is tapped from the cigarette lighter.

The remote display is almost a necessity as without it people like to tailgate me when they see the V1 in action.
