Helllp Please - Rear Sunshade, Roller Blind, Heckrollo Installation

Warm weather is here, so I went ahead and obtained a rear roller blind/heckrollo. After seeing the grief Frenchy went through with his electric one, I decided to go with a new manual one. Unfortunately, it didn't come with any installation instructions. After looking at things, I see plenty of opportunity for a mis-installation or breaking of the mounting parts (which with their sticky tape seem like a get-it-right-the-first-time-or-you-are-screwed situation!). If any of you who have installed these could guide me, I would appreciate it.

First, how is it mounted to the back shelf? Do I install it like in B so that I insert the screws straight down into the bottom wall of the "trough" in the back shelf? (note the Mercedes symbol and the vertical lines on the roller's cover if that helps you orient things)



Or do I install it like in A where I actually screw it into the back_wall of the trough?



After that, how do install the "oh so easy to break" clips? Is this the correct orientation?



If so, how do I clip these things in (I think I understand the sticky tape aspect)? If you can describe how each of Tab 1 and Tab 2 go in, I would appreciate it:



Does Tab 2 go along the side and then Tab 1 go along the top (yes, those are some sweet-assed arrows I made!)? If so, I am not sure I understand how to get both hooks to clip-in at the same time. Due to their perpendicular nature, it seems like you have to somehow snap both in at the same time because one prevents the other from sliding during installation? It seemed like I could break things by trying to force it.



All guidance will be appreciated and hopefully this will help others figure things out in the future.

Is this a OEM or the like, W202 manual blind? Im thinking of getting one but with a dark tint it might be useless?

Yes, OEM. I don't want to tint my windows, so this is a decent option for me. If you already have tint, I don't see a reason to install the roller blind.

I installed mine like (A). I didn't use the hardware that came with
it because it's too short. I ended up drilling it through and using
a long enough machine screw and nut to hold it in place properly.

For the tabs, you can't go wrong installing it, it only goes one way
and yes, those tabs can break off very easily. I ordered extra
on mine bec. I know it gets brittle with sun exposure.

Finally, my rear window is tinted and still it helps to have a
shade in the back. More of an added protection.

Thanks for the insights. Just for clarification, you didn't take the panels around the window off before inserting the tabs, did you?

No I did not. I just used my index finger to
pull it out enough to insert the tab.

Hi Doug, I confirm orientation like A, screw down! This is as per factory instruction. I've installed, below the rear shelf (opening the speaker grill) one sort of metal nut, since the shelf itself can't keep well the metal screw! I suggest this.

As far as the upper clip, you don't need to dismount anything, it's only a matter to find the correct orientation, I confirm that it's a little bit confusing.

On the factory plastic clip there was a sort of glue over the surface in way of the "2" in your photo. That should be the surface in contact with the window.

Since I've sold the car and the shade I hope that the information are correct, but I'm quite sure 99.99%

Thanks for the advice, guys. I went ahead and gave it a try. Since I wasn't sure I would get it right, I did not peel off the sticky tape's protection. I will probably take things apart again at some point and redo it if people advise that the sticky tape is really important.

For the benefit of others who read this later looking for help installing one of these, here are some more thoughts:



The best method I found for installing the clips (others please chime in if you have a better way):
1. Move a couple of inches from the side, pull down the headliner (not too much!) and install the clip's front hook.
2. Slide the clip halfway toward the side of the headliner to where it meets the side panel. Now pull the side panel out a bit.
3. Continue to slide the clip toward the side panel and align the clips's side hook on the clip so that it catches the edge of the side panel. Make sure it is catching the side panel!!! Now finish by pushing the clip to the side and toward the back (it will pretty much guide itself) until the side hook is fully seated. Use a strong flashlight with a narrow beam to make sure the side hook seated correctly!



Since I have never seen a picture on the net of a clip installed, here it is. For those who have never seen one, top bar of the roller blind is spring loaded like a curtain rod. You compress the ends so that they can snap into the holes/indentations that are molded into the clips.



As others have noted, I don't think the screws will hold long. After you install the screws for the base into the shelf, you can easily go into the trunk, find these key hole shapes (one on each side), reach up and be able to feel the screw that secures the base. This should make it easy to install a replacement machine screw with washers. The red arrow points to where you can just see the screw peeking through.

For MeMyself, JOESID and others who have been trying to locate one of these, it was tough to find in the US but should be fairly easy if you live in Europe. Supposedly these are no longer made any more, so you need to find a place that sells used or has new "old stock." I am not sure if my unit had to come from Germany or if it was in a warehouse in the U.S.

If you live in Europe, search the German ebay.de website and use the search terms mercedes and heckrollo (not heckrollo elektrisch unless you want the electric one, but be warned installation for those is a huge project!). I have been watching the site and there is one guy who has consistently had an auction up there for the past few weeks. Others post them up there fairly frequently and the final auction prices have been reasonable. For U.S. buyers, the problem is that none of them would ship to the U.S., and if they had, the shipping would have been very expensive (unless you wanted to wait 8 weeks for surface shipping). Remember, you will also need a "mounting kit" (two plastic clips and two screws) which usually is not part of the auction. Luckily, these kits seem to be pretty easy to find.

In the U.S., it took some effort for me to find one of these. As an example, there are three dealers in Atlanta. Dealer 1 could not even find the part, dealer 2 found the part after I gave him the number but said they could not get it, dealer 3 found the part when I gave him the number and said he would order it but that it would take a long time to get and honestly he didn't believe that the order would ever be filled. He told me the computer showed 0 roller blinds and 13 mounting kits in the entire U.S.

I contacted a lot of places online, but only one place responded back - oempartsdirect.com. They said they would could supply it in 2 days. Ordering was a bit of a hassle and it ended up taking about 2 1/2 weeks, but I did get the part. As I said, I don't know where they ended up getting it and I don't know if they can get any more. Here is the information you will need if you want to try to order one.

Pay attention, the next part is a bit confusing but this is what Jamie had me do:

066691109 – actual Rollerblind/Rear Sunshade number of the unit he sent me. Unfortunately, their online ordering page will not recognize this number.

66691183 – this is number you must input online AND AND AND then note in the special notes/instruction box that your really need the manual rear rollerblind for the w202 which he says is actually 066691109. I would then follow up with a phone call to discuss and confirm with Jamie to make sure he sees your note. Nobody ever answered the phone and I was always sent to voicemail, but they will usually call you back within a 24 hours.

066691179 – Mounting Kit

Price was a bit variable as I worked through the ordering process but most likely it will be in the range of $100 to $125 for both the roller blind, mounting kit and shipping.

One other point, when you receive your items, examine the plastic wrapping for the roller blind very carefully. My mounting kit was taped to the wrapping for the rollerblind. The packaging for the mounting kit is so small though that I did not notice it and thought they had forgotten to send it. Don't throw any wrapping out until you are sure you have all of your parts

Any thoughts on if it would be possible to paint all the black pieces trim color? I see xvvvz has the beige interior and I have the light gray... Do any of you think its possible to paint it the same color as the speaker grills? (and NO not the mesh of the shade , just all the black trim and fittings...)

Hi,

I fitted mine about 2 months ago:



For the bottom, I simply screwed in to the parcel shelf with 2 long screws - Version 'A' in your pictures!

As for the top, its tricky. Use the 2 clips provided (make sure they have sticky tape attached) and wedge them into the C pillar trim as shown.

Personally, I wouldn't mess with it. I don't think the black looks bad and a poor paint job could look even worse. Also, I have always had bad luck with repainted items that sit in the hot sun all day. I could see paint getting transferred to the fabric on your rear shelf.

Here is the roller blind fully retracted. From a seated position, it would be pretty hard to even see the parts back there. This was shot from much higher and angle (sorry for the poor picture lighting). I don't think the black is objectionable.
