    c36 engine rattle

when my 95 c36 engine is idling, it sounds like a diesel. Many people told me this is normal for my engine, but i really don´t think so. Is it true? or do you beleive i should have it checked? what should i look for?
    thanks in advance

Its completely normal, I have never heard one that doesnt, there is a post on the web somewhere about a guy that tried a rebuilt engine, a new long block and a new crate motor, they all made the noise.

Was a bit of a factory defect to do with the pistons.

If its really bad it could be the belt tensioner shock, or the cam timing solenoid.

Does it do it when its cold, or warm?

    both cold and warm.
but only when idling. once you give it a little gas, it goes away.

    ...

my car has done this since i've owned it. the person who sold it to me showed me an article in which it described this diesel sound.

I recall one of the members here refer to the sound as a jar of nickels....lol

Hmm, odd that it does it when cold, mine only does it when warm, but yes, if you open the throttle a little it goes away at about 1500rpm no?

    No! No! No!

    They don't all do it!

My C36 does NOT rattle like a diesel at idle. I have the upgraded belt tensioner, but the old one works fine it you know how to look after it.

haha. and i thought i was alone in the world with this sound. Doesnt bother me as much as my semi-plugged radiator or one of my rear door pannels slightly vibrating... lol

    You are very lucky then

For most C36s this doesnt seem to fix it, I have the updated tensioner and replaced it for good measure, no difference.

Its an inherent factory flaw that someone spend thousands trying to remedy, I can't find the post right now but its definitely normal

    Cheers

If yours doesn't make that sound then you dont have a real AMG!

I have also done the tensioner and it made no change in the sound. I have also measured the timing chain to see if it streched and changed the chain tensioner. None of it helped.
