    C 180 performance upgrade

    hi i had the 1998 C 180 ... today i drive it ... its like 28 degrees

here and i drive 60 km and 2000 rpm (auto tranny) ...

and i floor the accelerator pedal and nothing happened ...

is this normal??? i know it is slow .. but i dont think this car is that

    bad???

do you guys know something to increase the performance other

    than turbocharge and compressor ....

especially for the low end rpm???

is the pod air intake or air filter does help????

    thanks a lot

I think its because your enigne is such a small displacement and naturally aspirated, we dont have the naturally aspirated 1.8L engine in Canada, ours are supercharged, so they are pretty responsive.
An intake may make your care slightly more responsive, but I cant completely say it will, it for sure will not give you any HP gains, but maybe a slightly more responsive feel. its not a super expensive mod to do, so it may be worth while, plus it will sound nice too!
The only real way to open up that engine is to either turbo or supercharge it. but that will cost some serious $$$$$!!

Does your engine have a rough feel at idle?, any check enigne light on?
what grade of gas do you use in it?
try adjusting the throttle cable a bit tighter, feel the cable for slack, if there is a lot of slack it takes more pedal travel to actuate the throttle, you can adjust tension on it, by turning the plastic nut on the cable, but dont tighten it too much as the idle rpm will increase on you, just turn the nut enough to take out the slack.
    hope this helps.

so do you reckon its normal??? may be i want to do the air intake first and see how it goes .. yeah turbo or supercharge will cost you heaps ... and may be for the resale value also will cost you more ... as i'm not from australia and i need to sell it when i'm going back ....

the gas here i use is shell optimax 98 i reckon ... about the throttle cable ... to tighten it ... is that closer to the box or the other way???

for the air intake do i have to change the whole kit or is it possible to change the airbox to the pod filter and create adaptor or something to connect to the standart hose??? as for my honda i only use the pod filter and use stainless steel pipe to connect the pod and the standart hose and its works .....

    thanks for the information ....

    cheers

has it always been like that?.. with small displacement engines your not getting that much power out of them.. more for economy purposes, so as long as you have no driveability problems (check enigne lights on, rought running) Id say it was normal. how many KM's are on the car?
it certainly isnt your gas grade!!.. damn I wish I could get 98 from the pumps over here.. we have 94 as the max.

for the cable, when your standing on the left sid eof the engine bay, and your looking at the throttle cable, you want to turn the nut towards you.. i hope that makes sense.
the intake you can either just put a replacement K&N or other manufacturer higher flowing air filter in the stock housing, or you can purchase a "cold air intake kit" that replaces the airbox with pipe and a cone filter. or you can buy your own intake pipe and make one yourself. lots of options!

In AUS, dont they have the steering column on the right-hand side?

Australia uses RON octane rating where the U.S. and Canada use RON+MON/2 rating. 98 RON is equiv to about 93 octane in the US and Canada. Just thought I'd clear that up.

Regardless, it is still equivalent to our premium fuel, so it should not be an issue.

i'd say more or less ... yes it does like that many times ... but if like i step on the pedal half from .. let say traffic lights it does rev and have a good response .. but why from 60 kmh - 80 kmh its like nothing happen when i floor the pedal ... i'm going to ask about this tommorow to the mercedes benz specialist workshop ..
my car now has done 81200km ... no engine light or anything it seems normal .. is there anything about the settings or something that has gone wrong???? b/c i'm new in mercedes world ...
about the cable i think i get it (away from the box right not towards the box) ... but how far it will go ??? ...
i think i might get the cone filter ... do you think by replace the standart filter to K&N will give more power???
with the C 200 is it much different power????

Well I think you said that you were around 2000rpm at 60.. I think that at low rpms the benz's dont have too much response to them on naturally aspirated motors, feel a lil slugish.
about the cable i think i get it (away from the box right not towards the box) ... but how far it will go ???
its not a factor of how far it will go, you just want to take the slack out of the cable (if any at all) dont tighten it too much.
i think i might get the cone filter ... do you think by replace the standart filter to K&N will give more power???
nope.. not more power.. maybe a more responsive feel, thats about it.
