How did you detect this? The only way to read pinging/knocking is to use MB OBDII scanner to read your knock sensor reading. Only excessive pinging can be heard from outside the block. Just because you don't hear it, doesnt it mean it doesn't happen!

True. I guess I was comparing it to my old Porsche 930 where I can definitely hear the noise especially on the higher RPM's.

high compression engines require high octane gas, cheep gas = fouled plugs, engine run on, and valves not closing properly, i used to own a 1991 jetta gtx with the 16v motor and it didnt like cheep gas at all, different people have different expeirences

all my benzs get the 94 octane including my 71 280 sel

its a benz were talking about dont cheap out on gas.
its like a $1.50 more per fill
so cars in europe constantly burn their pisotns, since the lowest grade ive seen is 93, but people usually get 95.

I ran 87 once (actually my dad put it in there by mistake) and my car actually died on me and then once I got it started again I had no problem with it dying, it just ran like ABSOLUTE SH!T! I followed the instructions in the owner's manual about what to do when you accidentally put 87 octane in it and it ran fine. Then a few weeks ago I had some problems with bad gas (93 octane)from a Chevron station and I was told by the dealer to run a full tank of 89 octane. I noticed a little difference in throttle response and engine response, but nothing major as far as performance with 89 ocatne. Went back to 93 and car runs great!

my previouse owner told me "she" put 91 in and it hesitated badly under acceleration, and made funny noises
i had to hold myself from slapping her stupid.....

we have a choice of 91,96 and 98 here so i only run 98 or 96
i guess it is programmed to make use of these levels..

Different octane rating in " Kiwiland ".
Subtract 6 points from these numbers to get our octane rating.
Yes, I have a few mods, but they\'re so discrete, my wife hasn\'t noticed them.

hmmmm, that would make our 91 = 84,we'd all be out pushing the car

i guess thats why most of the world get de-rated spec jap cars, when almost all of our inports here are JDM spec....one of my previous rides(evo3),had 100 octane stamped on the fuel lid!

For the last year I drove my C220, I never used anything more than 87 oct. It never knocked, and I could never tell the difference from the many years prior when I used 91-93 oct.

I'm not making any comments on the burned piston debate...but FYI, Octane ratings in the EU are RON numbers only, while US are (RON + MON)/2

So EU 95 could be pretty much the same as our 91...

    hai guys..

is 87 octane the same as 87 RON... ???

if it is.. here in malaysia..the premium unleaded ranges from 97 to 98 RON...

I understand the ECU from a Japanese Domestic Market(JDM) cars like mine are tuned to run on 100 RON fuels..

and I understand also from what I read in many forums and article that the i6 engine in particular demands a premium unleaded gas..

from my experience.. using a low grade fuel would have a long term impact on the internals.. such as the pistons and the conrods..

personally .. I ALWAYS use premium quality gas..

    Just to clarify this.
    RON = Research Octane Number.
MON = = Motor Octane Number.
As pointed out by " Renn 208 ", what we use in North America is:
    RON + MON : 2 !!!!
So, if you are " offshore ", your RON numbers are about 4 points higher than ours.
In other words, your 97 RON is the same as our 93.
Let's not forget the most erroneus statement in this thread, that a HIGHER octane fuel than required would burn holes into pistons.

we have 100 octane racing gas here in hawaii, but only one gas station carries it on the entire island of Oahu. and the cost, just to mention, was $6.50/gallon a year ago when I tried it, last week I drove by that station, looked at the sign, it was $7.09/gallon. holy shiet!

i think the price for 105 octane is in the high 5 dollar range here for 9/10's of gallon..

The octane rates sound very low, don't know if you have the same categorization as we have here in germany, but I have to fuel with at least 95 octane gasoline in my C220. The C230K has to fuel with at least 98 octane gasoline. Further most of the gas stations here offer 100 octane gasoline.
