Hi 202-ers,

I did my search and could not find any relevant article to my problem, so I posted this instead.

I was driving out of a parking lot yesterday (the car is 97 C280), and I had to stop at the booth for 30 seconds, so I put my shifter to N.

I put it back to D (s mode as usual) and drive slowly, but my car would not shift out of the 1st gear til it reached 3000 rpm and stayed there for at least 5 sec.

It then shifted to 2nd gear without jerking, and everything works normal. This is the first time this ever happened to me, is this normal? or is it a sign of bad tranny???

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot guys.

was it cold out, was the car cold?, cause in the morning mine takes a while to shift out of first i think it is a feature on the transmission

I do apologized for the confusion, but the car was warmed up already. The engine temperature was around 90 degrees celsius after 30 minutes of driving.

it could be a faulty neutral safety switch, or the linkage needs to be adjusted.

have you had your transmission serviced properly at the suggested intervals? ever changed the filter / cleaned the screen?

it's also a symptom of low fluid, if there is a possible slow leak.

LOL, same thing happened to me today!. I was driving normally, stopped in front of a light, turned green and as I stepped on the gas the revs went up to 3000-ish on first gear and took a long time to shift to second gear. The car behaved like if It was a manual one and I was holding the clutch at the same time I was accelerating.
I changed the tranny fluid at 80,000 miles a week ago, and now the car is shifting normally but VERY rough!. From 2nd to 3rd gear the car shiftes so rough that it hurts lol. HELP! (I have a 96 C280)

I serviced my transmission a year ago and 20K miles have gone by since then....

Thanks a lot for your help, I will get an ATF change next month.

Its running fine now though.... hopefully it stays like this

I just had mine serviced and they havent been able to find whats wrong with the car. The transmission is shifting VERY hard from 2nd to 3rd gear and a little bit hard from 3rd to 4th.
For some reason it shifts smoothly when its cold.
Oh, and I dont have the check engine light on.

Ever since I changed the fluid on mine its never butter smooth anymore unless I "feel" the gas pedal as its about to shift, meaning let off slightly.

I think the stupid idea of MB to make it hold gears and wind up the RPM when cold does damage to the trannys. No other cars do such stupid things like this and reaaaaly annoys me...aswell, having the engine rev up to 3500rpm in very cold temps is not good eitheir but I have no choice.

Thats unusual, when I changed my tranny fluid last year, my car was getting significantly smoother.

And then there was the occasional 1-2 jerk after letting go off the gas.

But the jerking is gone now!!

Mine also warms up in the morning and takes longer to shift (usually 2500), but never reached 3500 rpm to shift.
