View Full Version : Door water membrain's.
Hey all,
Anyone here fit 6.5" speakers in the front and needed to cut the plastic membrain?,how did you make it water resistant again?
Ever since i installed my 6.5" speakers in the front i get a leak under the speaker inside the door, pretty much only when i wash the car.
I got the speaker holders from the wreckers, they are aparently not a genuine MB part??(according to my parts guy) though they use OE screw holes and need some stand-offs to bolt in properly, they do not have any gaurd against water as the speaker protrudes well into the door.
I guess i could make something its just more time i dont have.is there an easy way out apart from buying the genuine speakers.

Ops,i just found this....
And this answers the question why my speaker holder needed stand-offs to bolt in correctly.
hopfully it will clear the magnet.

23K,
Doors on cars are NOT 100% waterproof. Water can get inside the door via the seals at the edge of the door window.
To allow for this eventuality, your doors have drains in 2 to 3 places at the bottom of the door (check the door lower edge and rubber seal interface).
When the drains clog-up, the water level trapped between the inner and out skins of the door structure builds up until it finds a hole to escape from...ala your speaker unit.
Locate and clear your door drains and your problem is solved.
Hey!,
Actually i was suprised to see they only seal half the door with plastic, and they use a very thin glue with no give,so it eventually leaks with or without the drains being blocked!.
Mine leaked around the speaker as i did not have the plastic cup behind so water was free to drip right on through,so i got second handplastic cups earlier in the week but they needed way to much cutting to fit the magnet,so i took them back, however its a pain to make anything else to take there place,i got some free Bose enclosures/speakers but there no use either,so have ordered new plastic cups for half the price(10 ea) i payed for the second hand ones earlier and will space the speaker out as far as i can then cut the cup.
not sure why my car never had the plastic cup in the first place, weird.(factory mount holes had never been used either)
If anyone else has there door cards off remember to tighten the door retainer those bolts seem to come loose on all 202.

>>remember to tighten the door retainer those<<
What do you mean by "door retainer", please?
Sorry i wasnt sure what to call it,i guess you could call it the "Door stop"....its the part which stops the door opening wider than its able to,and holds the door open at the mid point. there are three bolts, one inside and two where it prodrudes out,you will find all three come loose.
Update...
Ended up purchasing the splash guard cups for the rear of the speakers, however they didnt fit so well with the larger speaker magnets,so had to make some spacers:

After siliconing the liner back on and refitting the trim and speakers i found there was more rattle than music, turns out the plastic liner was the culprit,so pulled it all out, blanked off all the big holes with 3mm plastic, siliconed in the speaker cup than lined the door with alloy backed bitchumen(similar to dynamat @ 1/3 the cost)
