Dear all,

I'm the newbies in this webboard.. I have a plan to change my c220 to c36 or c43 AMG. What all I need to change?? Is the 5 sp tranny got lots of issues? I am the AMG addicted but juz got money to do.

I was thinking about doing the same. I want to know the same thing and if it will affect the gas mileage too?

Welcome to the club :)

Regarding the transmission of the C36, a few of us have had problems with teh 5speed offered for 1997. But it appears the 4 speed from 95-96 was solid.

Aside from the transmission and engine, I am not sure what else is necessary (minus the cosmetics that is :p), except for the suspension and of course exhaust.

Unless you have a connection for the AMG M104 variant, they are probably hardder to find than the C43 engine, especially since a lot more interest is into converting C43s into w202 C55s. There are a few C43 engines and trannys that occasionally pop up in the classifieds :D

Some of the used M113 4.3L engines don't have wiring harnasses or fuel systems, so that would need to sourced too. Example, Carl's got a 4.3L engine with harnass and fuel system; mine's a bare shortblock [EDIT: longblock]. Mine's much cheaper as a result; though for your project, I'd recommend Carl's. My engine would be good for someone who blew their 4.3L in a E, CLK or C43, since they have all the electronics and fuel system components already. You'll have a hell of a time finding everything from salvage yards; would have to buy a lot of it new. Then there's the car chassis year factor, and how the ECU operates with the Chassis ... this is only touching on the complications.

The 5.4L swap from the 4.3L is 100% plug&play on the C43. What you're proposing is however very far from that. Whew boy, there's a lot to what you're proposing. Honestly, I'd recommend selling your car and buying a C36 or C43 as it would be much cheaper in the long run. ;)

exactly ur gonna spend a lot of money on modding it and changing practicaly the whole mechanics of the car..y not sell the car..put the money of the mods u have in mind and buy a c36/43...i got a c230..and i thought spending thousands on replacing engines, or trying to squeeze more hp's from it is pointless..currently looking for a c36 to buy

You make a good point, I'm just worried about having to solve the same problems that I had with my car.

What I meant was that I was worried about having to fix problems with a new 202 that I already had on mine.

Hey and welcome to Club202!

I have the 5-speed tranny, yup the one that was intro'd in early 97'

I have to admit i like it more then the 4-speed, and so far i havnt had ANY problems with it (maybe because i only have 57K on the car)

but at 40K the oil in it was changed.

just imagine all those metel gears rubbing in there - it would be a good idea to change that oil!

i know EXACTLY what u mean man im pretty scared of this myself i spent a decent ammount on changing and fixing up all the small stuff (oil's changed+tranny fluids, disks/callipers, filters, MAS, cleaned the AC systems, got my tranny tweaqued..etc etc....not im scared if i buy a new car ill be having to do all this again and i propably will, im more scared though that i will encounter new problems...so either way good luck ixoxi999
